Parasailor day

Last night we sailed through thick fog the whole way. We had wind of 10-15
knots from the SW. With the Parasailor up we moved pretty well with 15
knots of wind, but as the day wore on the wind dropped until we finally
gave up about 1/2 hour ago and took down the sails and turned on the
engine. Saw a couple of ships and, as Dan said, a few big dolphin; other
than that not much excitement. Arrival tomorrow at about 7:30-8:00 AM.

Nick Sr. 5/27/11

Friday May 27th

Today is the day that I wished no matter how bumpy we could average 8 knots
or more. I am so not going to win the pool and am going to lose $10. The
only thing exciting that happened was we saw two huge dolphins that didn't
play with us. We went about 4-6 knots the whole day. This is not going to
be a very good arrival for me.

5/26/11 Through the Stream

Last night we had a huge lightning storm. Luckily we did not get hit and we
crossed the Gulf Stream. The hottest the water got was 80F, that's hot. We
saw one freighter and another sail boat. Nothing much more than that
happened today. It was pretty slow. We averaged 4-7 knots and it was a
pretty boring day, but I did get to do a bunch of homework.

Dan Orem 5/26/11 4:30 PM

Home stretch

Dan pretty much said it all. We entered the Gulf Stream early this
morning. In the early going we (at least I) though this was much ado about
nothing. At one knot pushing us to the east, the stream wasn't much worse
than the vague currents we've had pushing us one way or the other the whole
trip. But as we got further into the stream, it reached up to 4 knots to
the east - I was impressed. Now we're out of the stream so our speed
toward Newport has picked up a bit, but the wind has eased to about 10
knots so we're not burning up the highways. Our best guess for arrival is
still sometime between midnight on Friday and noon on Saturday, with the
odds favoring Saturday morning, the day our daughter Maggie was born some
38 years ago.

The lightning last night was really impressive. Giant forks of lightning
lit up the sky. Sometimes there were multiple strikes within a second or
two, sounding like the grand finale on the 4th of July. We could watch
with awe and not too much worry because the storm was 20 miles away. It
was by far the biggest thunderstorm I've ever seen, it lasted all night,
and I'm glad we weren't in it.

As I write this we have 238 miles to go.

Wednesday 5/25/11

Today right before I was going to write the blog, we saw dolphins again.
This time there were at least 35 dolphins. Their pod was so big they had
to rotate around the boat so everyone could get a turn and sometimes they
would have a frank exchange of ideas and bump each other around. They're
very graceful to watch, they're not only hydro dynamic, but methane dynamic
too. Half the time you can see streams of bubbles coming from their
glutes. They were very interesting and were in front of the boat for at
least 15 minutes. They were very intent on jumping out of the water and
blowing their spouts just as they hit the water and spurting water
everywhere including on me. We have 378 miles to go and I think we'll
arrive at 3:15 AM on 5/28/11. I hope I win because I'll have $100 then.

Dan 5/25/11 @ 5:30 PM

Finally north of Cape Hatteras

Last night we had to motor all night - no wind again. This morning the
wind started coming up at about the time I relieved Frank (6 AM) and then
died again. It rose enough to set the Parasailor at about 9 AM and pretty
quickly got up to 18-20 knots. We struggled to control the Parasailor for
for a couple of hours and then gave up at about 11 AM, took it down and
sailed with regular sails for the rest of the day. We've had good wind and
made a lot of progress today. Just passed the latitude of Cape Hatteras
and we have 373 miles to go. Winds are predicted to be 15-20 knots from
the SW for the rest of the trip - just right. We're supposed to start
crossing the Gulf Stream at about midnight tonight. It's running pretty
hard (3-4 knots) to the east, so it won't help us much, but at least it's
running in the same direction as the wind so we won't have a rough
crossing.

We just did the arrival time pool. In order of optimism to pessimism, the
arrival estimates for 5/28/11 are:
Dan 3:15 AM
Nick Jr 3:37 AM
Adam 4:45 AM
Nick Sr 6:30 AM
Frank Noon

My money's on Frank or me.

No more fuel worries. I think we have enough diesel left to motor from
here to Newport if we had to, which seems very unlikely.

Tried to load a new chip into the Raymarine chartplotter so we will have
detailed charts for Newport, but although it works fine in the card reader
on my computer, it doesn't work on the chartplotter. I suspect the 5 year
old chartplotter probably needs a software update. Meanwhile we'll have to
come in the old fashioned way with paper charts.

Everything's fine here and we can smell the barn.

5/24/11 Calm day

Today the wind feeped out. It has gotten down to less than five knots and
at one point we were only going 1.2 knots when we had to turn off the
engine so that we could hear the weather on the SSB radio. However, we did
see a huge pod of dolphins. I was surprised most of them just past us
without seeming to notice us, but a family of five swam in front of our bow
for a long time. I saw a really big Portuguese Man of War. And what do you
know a sea turtle and the day has not ended so I might see more animals.
The seas have been flat as a pancake the whole day. At this rate we will
arrive in Newport on Saturday afternoon, but we are supposed to get more
wind soon so it might be a little earlier.

Dan
5/24/11 6:00 PM

A very (perhaps too) relaxing day

Dan pretty much said it all. Flat seas, no wind. We all took showers and
caught up on our sleep. Dan watched my favorite movie (Animal House)
twice. Nick Jr & I are a little worried about the heat we might take from
Laura & Pfoof for letting him watch it, but mostly it's good honest humor.
About 3 hours ago a catamaran appeared to our southeast. We called them on
the VHF radio. It was a husband and wife on a 46' cat named Hands Across
the Sea, headed from Antigua to Newport. They apparently aren't as
concerned about fuel conservation as we are, so they blew by us with both
engines going and are now on the horizon. Herb says the wind is supposed
to pick up in the morning from the SW. It has already started to come
around to that direction, but still only 5 knots, not enough to sail, but
the change in direction is encouraging. All in all a good day, but some
wind would be nice.

Monday 5/23

Today I woke up and had peanut butter apples for breakfast. My kidneys
haven't quite healed yet. Then I played a round of backgammon, lost; played
5 card draw to 21 points, won, then played gin rummy and won. I played
all these games with Adam. This is what Adam thinks of my backgammon in
haiku form: when Danny plays backgammon; sorrow is soon to follow; boo ho
ho ho ho.

Dad saw something gray in the water and we went up to the bow and saw a
mother and baby and father dolphins. They weren't as cool as the pod we
saw earlier or the pod we saw crossing the Atlantic, but they were cool.
Another sea creature we saw was a Portuguese Man 'O War. They come up out
of the water and ride the wind with their sail (top or dome). Dad wants me
to write a haiku and so I will write one about Adam losing a lot of
different games today: Adam won one game; Dan beat Adam by two games; poor
poor Adam.

Dan Orem
5/23/11

PS If you don't understand the reference to my kidneys, see earlier blog.

A long night of crashing through the waves

We motored all through the night last night. Even though the winds weren't
very high, the sea was rough so we spent the entire night crashing into one
wave after another. We headed 20 degrees to the west of our desired course
to ease the motion of the boat a bit, but it was hard to sleep for more
than short periods.

This morning we had good wind out of the NNE so we put up the staysail and
had a good sail until about an hour ago when the wind feeped. We'll motor
through the night and hope to sail again tomorrow. Seas have calmed down
some so tonight should be better for sleep. Wassail has four sails and
we've used them all on this passage, a new first.

I administered Frank's weekly shot today, something Phyllis has done many
times, but another new first for me.

Turns out that it's just as well that we've made slow progress the last two
days. When we talked with Herb Hilgenberg this afternoon, he told us there
will be gale force wind above 34 degrees latitude on Wednesday morning.
We'll take our time and get there Wednesday afternoon, by which time the
front is supposed to have moved out. We'll get an update tomorrow so we'll
make sure we don't arrive too soon. After things clear out above 34
degrees we're supposed to have good sailing with SW winds for the rest of
the trip.

I'm on KP today, so time to go prepare dinner (which is a matter of
reheating lasagna that Nick Jr made yesterday.)

The Gods must be angry

Today wasn't our best. Starting about 4 PM yesterday, the wind completely
died so we motored through the night. Today the wind gradually filled in
from the north, right on our nose so we have continued to motor all day.
We're now 250 miles SW of Bermuda. At about 2 PM I lay down for a nap and
was just getting comfortable when the clew ring pulled out of the genoa.
So much for the nap. I spent the rest of the afternoon repairing the sail.
The part where the ring is sewed to the clew is so thick that I couldn't
force a needle through the fabric so I had to drill holes in the fabric and
then thread the needle through the holes. Frank was a great help (drill
please, needle please, etc.).

The good news is that we finally got to talk to Herb Hilgenberg, so we know
what's ahead. The bad news is that we have two more days of wind right in
our nose. I'm a little bit worried about our fuel supply if the headwinds
last longer than we expect, so we'll motor through the night tonight and
then tomorrow we'll set the sails and start tacking into the wind. Herb
says that the wind is supposed to come around to the SW on Wednesday so we
have to muddle through until then.

As Dan said, we saw two very strange objects, one just below the surface
being kept afloat by a half dozen air bladders and a second close by that
looked like a floating drum. All the same color yellow. Haven't a clue
what that was all about.

Other than the sail, the boat is behaving well and everybody is happy and
healthy.

Nick Sr

Sunday 5/22/11

Today the wind came out of the north, which is basically the direction
we're headed. I might mention that in the last 3 days we've been sailing
through the Bermuda Triangle and 2 days ago we saw a strange rusted metal
container drifting on its side and today we saw a three what looked like
spheres attached to a cube with half spheres sticking out of it with a
circular mesh top that was just floating out here woo oo oo oo (insert
spooky music here) and we got close enough to talk to a person on another
boat - now that you don't get to see or do often. I did a little bit of
homework today and that's about it.

Got my sea legs today

Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! My stomach is sounding like Liverpool
United just won the World Cup. I finally got my sea legs today. I tested
my sea legs by doing a page of homework and then going below and playing
computer games. Unfortunately I'm having ice cream withdrawal, but I
finally know what I'm going to spend the money on that I have been saving -
a lifetime supply of ice cream and another freezer for Poppy's boat so the
next time I go sailing I can have ice cream.

Anyway, back to the sailing. We didn't exactly cruise along today, we
averaged 4-6 knots. We finally put up the Parasailor, which is a very big
spinnaker with a wing in the middle of it. The wing helps the sail be more
stable. So far we haven't had any incidents where the sail has fallen down
like last time - yet. But like they said in Life of Brian: "look on the
bright of life." So it seems like every downside of every situation
there's always and upside and vice versa.

Dan
5/21/11 6:30 PM

Slow day

The wind pretty much feeped in the middle of the night last night. It made
for a good night's sleep, but not much boat speed. We sighted another boat
about 10 miles ahead early this morning. We had just decided we were
overtaking them, when they called on the VHF radio to warn us that they had
just sailed past a large metal object. We kept an eye out as we
approached the point where they had seen it and sure enough some very large
object was bobbing up and down a mile or two to the east of us. Glad we
didn't get better acquainted.

A few hours later we overtook the other boat, which was a 40' sloop with a
husband and wife heading for the Chesapeake Bay.

We managed to get Herb Hilgenberg on the single sideband radio today. We
were too late to check in for today's predictions but by listening to his
advice to other boats we gather that we'll continue to have light winds at
least through tomorrow. Tomorrow we'll know the drill (check-in at 7:30
PM) so we can get guidance from Herb for the rest of the trip.

The Parasailor has made the difference between being able to sail and
having to motor. We have enough fuel aboard to motor about 750 miles and
we have 913 miles to go, so we'll keep sailing and conserve the fuel just
in case we need it later.

The other bit of drama today was that the two bolts that attach the boom
vang to the boom dropped out onto the deck. I'm made satisfactory repairs,
but a proper job of it will have to wait until we reach Newport.

The crew gave me a fair bit of grief for the number of boxes of cookies I
bought for the trip, but I notice that nobody refuses when the come out
after meals. BTW, tonight's dinner was a 2nd night of chilli and garlic
bread. Frank had KP so he got off easy, but we wanted to empty the pot in
any case.

Second full day

Today was a good day. No rain, not much sun either. The wind diminished
to 12-14 knots for most of the day so the sailing was pretty relaxed, but
we still averaged about 7.5 knots of boat speed. We passed the 1/4 way
point at about 4:40 this afternoon. Last night I saw another boat 12 miles
to the east of us. Other than that we have had the ocean to ourselves.

The only problem so far is that we can't get Herb Hilgenberg on the single
sideband radio. Herb has run a gratis weather routing service for nearly
two decades. We were hoping that he could tell us about weather ahead, but
his broadcasts have had so much static that we can't make out the words
(they originate in Ontario, Canada so they have a long way to travel.)

Just had a delicious chilli and garlic bread dinner, made by Nick Jr before
we left and reheated by Adam, who had KP duty today. I'm supposed to be on
watch right now so I'd better quit before Adam tires of covering for me.

Nick Sr 5/20/11 6:30 PM

Friday May 20th

Today we pretty much entered the Bermuda Triangle. Obviously the myths
about the Bermuda Triangle are totally true because my luck has changed and
I'm losing a lot more gin rummy games. Anyway, after Adam quit playing gin
rummy with me I played a quick backgammon game with my dad, threw-up and
then went to bed. I went to sleep with my elbow across my face and my butt
up in the air. Who needs a comfortable position? Then I woke up and
commented on how I had consumed only tiny bites and regurgitated them. So
I am living of the minuscule amount of fat on my body. Then I had a little
bit more water. Oh there it is I threw up a kidney. Then I had some
peanut butter apples, a well known kidney replacement according to my dad.
Now I'm feeling up to date and I'll feel up to date for the rest of the
trip.

Departure & 2nd Day

Um, well, god, OK erase all that. Poppy is being an ignorant dufus.

Yesterday we were out of the harbor @ 3:40 PM. Two hours into the sail we
saw 3 very large dolphins playing around the bow. If you listened hard
enough, you could almost hear the squeak coming out of their mouths and
after 10 minutes they left. Then I started playing gin rummy with Adam and
I kicked his butt hard! I won by 40 points.

Then we had chicken sandwiches for dinner. After that the barf fest began.

Today:

Today I woke up feeling fine. I tried to go back to sleep, but obviously
when you are moving and not asleep you get woozy, so I went up on deck and
tried to barf but there was nothing left in my stomach so I just went to
sleep in the cockpit. Then at 9 AM I had breakfast of candied ginger,
crackers and M&Ms - what a breakfast. Then I went back to sleep. Then I
woke up and had a couple of BBQ chips for lunch. I think I should start
this as my new routine for breakfast and lunch. It seemed really healthy.

After that I took another nap. Then when I woke up I started talking with
Frank, Adam and Dad about WWII. It amazes me how males can talk about
stupid subjects like WWII for hours on end. No offence to us.

I'm signing off early because Poppy doesn't want to take any more dictation
from me because he has to type it.

Preparation and departure

Mon May 16
Nick Jr, Dan & I arrived at the Puerto del Rey marina at about 5pm,
unpacked and stowed all the food and then dinner and bed.
Tue May 17
We did chores around Wassail until about 11am when Dan and his father drove
back to San Juan to pick up Adam & Frank. Meanwhile I stayed on Wassail to
do some maintenance work that's easier when there's nobody else on the
boat. The whole crew arrived at about 2:30pm, raring to go. Nick Jr spent
the rest of the afternoon cooking while Adam, Frank & I prepared the boat
for going offshore(remove the anchor from the bow roller, stow the dinghy,
rig a new spinnaker halyard, etc.) Then Frank treated us all to dinner at
the Metropol in beautiful downtown Fajardo.
Wed May 18
Spend the morning and early afternoon getting ready. Had to retrieve the
engine key from a mechanic who forgot to give it back, refill the propane
tank for the stove, fill the water tanks, etc. Finally ready to cast off
at about 2:30pm, then motored over to the fuel dock to fill the boat's
diesel tank and four jerry cans in case we run out of wind. Cast off from
the fuel dock at 3:38pm 5/18/11, next stop Newport, RI some 1425 miles
away. We cleared the reef on the north side of Puerto Rico at about 5pm
and then settled into a watch schedule: Adam, then Frank, then Nick Sr,
then Nick Jr. We're standing 3 hr watches so we all have plenty of time
for sleep. Late afternoon a school of dolphin came to play around the bow.
Then light dinner and bed for all but the watch keeper.
Thu May 19
Woke this morning to heavy rain and lots of wind. The autopilot couldn't
cope so Frank steered while Nick Jr and I reefed the main. Big seas and
wind in the 20-25 knot range for the next couple of hours and since then
the weather has been pretty benign, wind about 12-14 knots, overcast skies,
and seas not bad. We've been averaging close to 8 knots since we cleared
the reef yesterday so we're all anxious to see how much distance we covered
in the first 24 hours; 163 miles so far with another 1.5 hours until the
end of the first 24 hour period.

Dan got a little seasick last night and again this morning and the adults
are all a bit damp from this morning's rain, otherwise life is good.
Tonight at dinner we're going to collect money and predictions for our
arrival time in Newport, I'm guessing sometime before midnight on the 26th.

Nick Sr.

The last couple of days

May 16
We got on the airplane at 8am, flew to San Juan, picked up a car, and got
most of the food. Then I got to the Wassail and played computer games
until dinner and then went to bed.

May 17
Today I got all of my geography challenge part of the homework done. My
strategy is to finish 2 1/2 or more projects per day including the blog.
We only bought engine coolant and a little bit more food and picked up Adam
and Frank, two more members of our crew.

Test email blog update

This is a test to make sure I can update the blog via email.

Nick Orem

Fajardo, Puerto Rico to Newport, RI

We are about to fire up the Wassail Wanderings blog after a 18 month absence. Wassail is now in Fajardo, PR. We will set sail on Wednesday May 18th or Thursday May 19th on the rhumb line course to Newport, RI. We hope to arrive in Newport 8-10 days after our departure. The crew will consist of me (Nick Orem, Sr), my son (Nick Jr), my grandson (Dan Orem), Adam Smith (Nick Jr's good friend), and Frank Connard Jr (my good friend and a classmate from The Amos Tuck School). Nick Jr, Dan & Adam sailed across the Atlantic with me in Nov-Dec 2009. Frank has sailed on Wassail for various legs of our passage from Sweden to Puerto Rico over the past five years. We hope that Dan will again be our blogger over the next couple of weeks.
Stay tuned for more updates in the next few days.
